Twelve priority steps, then fourteen tasks for the liquidator. Here is what has to be done after a death in Quebec, in the order it has to be done, and which of them we carry for you. No sign-up is needed to read this page.
If a death has just occurred, do not read this page now. Call 514 914-2106, at any hour. Only one decision matters tonight, and that is your loved one being taken into care. This list will still be here tomorrow.
These happen in the days following the death, before the estate really opens. We carry several of them at no extra charge — it is noted each time.
The point almost nobody knows, and it saves weeks. To query the will registers, a notary can use an attestation of death — which we produce as soon as we take your loved one into our care. If you make the request yourself, you will need the act of death from the Registrar of Civil Status, which takes considerably longer to arrive. Go through a notary with our attestation and the search starts right away.
In every one of our packages, from direct cremation to a complete funeral, all of the following is included in the price shown:
This is the part of the work everyone underestimates, and the part that exhausts families who take it on alone. See our packages and their prices.
These begin once the funeral is settled and often stretch over months. The liquidator — what used to be called the executor — carries them out on behalf of all the heirs.
These fourteen tasks are not ours to perform: they belong to the liquidator, usually with a notary alongside. What we supply are the documents and the letter templates needed for each of them, in the Estate Assistance platform included in every one of our packages.
These bodies are the official source and their procedures change. This page describes what we see every week; where the two differ, they are right.
Allow yourself to talk about the loss, with family or with people close to you. Needing to come back to it repeatedly is normal — everyone grieves at their own pace, and it matters to respect other people's as much as your own.
The administrative file closes long before the grief settles. That is one of the traps of this period: once the paperwork is done, everyone around you assumes it is over. It is not over. Our grief resources stay available, and they cost nothing.
A question about any of these steps?
Call us at 514 914-2106, at any hour. We answer families who have not done business with us either — it costs us nothing and it sometimes saves you an expensive mistake.

With the certificate of death, then with the funeral arrangements. Until the certificate exists, nothing else can move — not the declaration, not the will search, not the estate.
Everything else on this list comes afterwards, and none of it is decided on the first night.
The person who settles the estate on behalf of all the heirs — what used to be called the executor. The will usually names them; failing that, the heirs designate one among themselves.
Being liquidator is neither an honour nor a punishment: it is an office, with real responsibilities and work that often stretches over months. It can be declined, and it can be carried with a notary alongside.
The attestation is produced by the funeral business. It is available immediately and is enough for many urgent steps — including a will search made by a notary.
The death certificate and the copy of the act come from the Registrar of Civil Status, cost $37.75 and $46.75 respectively, and take longer. We make both requests for you; the fees are added to the price of the package.
Because they now belong to the estate rather than to a person. The bank cannot let them operate until the liquidator has been identified and the estate opened.
A joint account generally remains accessible to the surviving co-holder: that is often what pays the first costs. Check with your institution before counting on it.
Yes, and it is not rare: an estate can be insolvent, meaning the debts exceed the assets. That is precisely what the inventory exists to establish.
Until then, avoid any step that might count as acceptance — emptying an apartment, disposing of property, paying debts out of your own pocket. Talk to a notary before, not after.
Several months, often more than a year where there is real estate, several heirs, or tax returns to bring up to date. The funeral is settled in a few days; the estate is not.
That is one of the traps of this period: once the funeral paperwork is done, everyone around you assumes it is over. It is not over, administratively or for you.
In every one of our packages, at no extra charge: the declaration of death and five official attestations, the request and the authorizations, ordering the civil status documents, the Retraite Québec death benefit application and the official receipt for funeral expenses paid.
Then the cancellations — health insurance card, social insurance number, driver's licence, housing allowance, hunting and firearms possession licences, passport, GST and QST accounts, Retraite Québec pension, allowances from the Ministry of Employment and Social Solidarity — and the notices to Revenu Québec and the Canada Revenue Agency.
The liquidator's fourteen tasks: the inventory, the notice of closure, the account of the estate, the distribution, the property transfers. That is not our trade and we will not pretend otherwise — it belongs to the liquidator, usually with a notary alongside.
What we supply are the documents and the more than thirty letter templates they will need, in the Estate Assistance platform included in every one of our packages.
Not always. A simple estate, with no real property and no conflict, can be settled without one. As soon as there is a building, several heirs, a business, or the slightest disagreement, a notary costs less than the mistake they prevent.
We receive no commission from any notary, and we impose none on you. We will tell you plainly when we think you need one.
Yes. Call 514 914-2106: we answer questions about these steps even if the funeral was entrusted elsewhere. It costs us nothing and it sometimes saves you an expensive mistake.
