If the deceased contributed sufficiently to the QPP, their family may receive a one-time death benefit of up to $2,500. This amount is typically paid to the person who covered the funeral expenses, within 60 days of the death. After this period, it may be paid to any legal heir or estate representative who applies.
Applications must be submitted within 5 years of the date of death.
The benefit is taxable and will generate a tax slip in the name of the estate.
Proof of death is not required if the person passed away in Quebec, as the civil registry automatically informs Retraite Québec.
